Evidemment, pour beaucoup, le Cirio est un "cliché": le beau rade rempli de petites vieilles mastiquant avec difficulté les cacahouètes offertes avec leurs half & half pour le plus grand plaisir des touristes nippons y photographiant du "typique". A tous ceux-là, nous dirons oui, mais... Superbe intérieur 1900, ambiance forcément moins "jeune con" qu'ailleurs, endroit propice à la romance et aux déclarations amoureuses, bref, une certaine classe. Que n'auront jamais les gargottes house et leur mobilier de toc pour trentenaires nostalgiques, par exemple.

The Cirio is right in the heart of historical Brussels (the only place more touristy would be the Grande Place) and yet it somehow manages to retain its authenticity.

Even in the height of summer, when the backpackers and the tour bus hordes are flooding the pavement outside, you will find a haven of old Brussels in this cafe. In fact, the Cirio has been the object of many attempts to buy it up and commercialise it but the management has always resisted. This, after all, was Jacques Brel's favourite café.

The interior is a forest of turn-of-the century mirrors, brass and statuary. It looks like a theme pub at first glance…but then it dawns on you that it's all genuine. Sitting on the leather benches you will see a slice of respectable Brussels life, from the businessmen to the little old ladies with their poodles. The waiters are dressed in the traditional aprons and treat you with a satisfying mixture of reserve and disdain - to remind you that waitering is a serious profession, I suspect.

The classic Cirio tipple is a "half and half" - a glass of Champagne and white wine together. It might sound sacrilegious to some, but I can assure you it is very pleasant. Also worth trying is the "Scotch" en fut (on tap). This is a version of the famous Scotch ale from Newcastle Breweries in the North of England that is specially exported to Belgium. Lovers of the original article have a surprise in store for them.

Incidentally, for the connoisseurs of such things, the gentlemen's toilets in the Cirio are especially fine.

Authentiek art-nouveaucafé, veel authentieker dan de Falstaff-fabriek aan de andere kant van de Beurs. Een absolute aanrader voor nostalgici. Men serveert de befaamde half-en-half (schuim- en witte wijn) zoals het hoort: met de flessen aan tafel en altijd nét boven de glasrand.

De Cirio laaft zijn klanten hier reeds sinds 1886, en heeft, vandaag althans, vele malen meer charme dan de Falstaff, zijn (min of meer) illustere overbuur aan de andere kant van het Beursgebouw. Hier kan men nog op zijn gemak van zijn half-en-half (een mengeling van witte wijn en Champagne/schuimwijn en een uitvinding van dit huis!) sippen, en zitten zowel oudjes als hun kleinkinderen gezellig naast en tussen mekaar te keuvelen. Het interieur alleen al is een verplaatsing waard. Vergeet zeker niet even de toiletten te gebruiken, nog helemaal ingericht met de originele betegeling en porseleinen urinoirs. De tijd is hier ingedommeld, laten we hem zeker niet wakker maken…
